Hydom hospital
In 1963 was the administration of the Hospital handed over to the local church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT). The hospital is under the Medical Board which in turn is elected by the General Assembly of ELCT, Mbulu Synod.
Haydom Lutheran Hospital (HLH) is located in the Manyara region, 300 km from Arusha. It is among faith based Hospital (FBOs) upgraded to be a referral hospital in the area and serves 7 districts in 4 regions. The hospital provides access to health care for more than 900,000 people in its catchment area, and 5.7 million people in the greater reference area. The hospital now has 420 beds capacity and 680 employees of different cadres.
The hospital consists of several clinical departments, a research department, School of Health Sciences and community based cultural programs. HLH works under the vision that the hospital should cater for the needs of the whole human being – physically, mentally, spiritually and socially. We focus on reducing the burden of disease, poverty alleviation, capacity building and to create good partnerships with other organizations who share the same vision and objectives.
The Curriculum at Year 7 – 9 includes English, Mathematics, Science, Art and Design, ICT, History, Geography, French, Kiswahili, Business Studies, Drama, Music and Physical Education. Studies at this point prepare students for studies at IGCSE level. While embracing all fields of study we emphasize on proficiency in literacy and numeracy. An exposure to a broad curriculum provides students an opportunity to have a taste of everything before they can eventually make their choice of subjects at higher levels.
At Year 10 and 11 [IGCSE] students have to study English, Mathematics, and either Swahili or French as their core subjects. Elective subjects include Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, English Literature, Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Art and Design, Music, Drama, ICT, Computer Science and PE. Students select subjects that will lead them to their future studies and those that they excel in. Students are expected to study eight subjects and in their choices they must have subjects from different groups (Mathematics, English, Foreign Language, Science, Humanities and Vocational subjects). This allows students to have a broad-based course of study while creating flexibility for studies of their choice in future.
At Year 12 and 13 [A Level] students choose four courses at AS (Year 12) and three courses at A2 (Year 13). We have a wide variety of subjects to choose from to accommodate interests of all students across the board. They include English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, English Literature, Economics, Accounting, Business Studies, Art and Design and AICT.
