Matema Lutheran Hospital is a faith-based organization (FBO) hospital owned by Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT) – Konde Diocese. It’s situated along the Lake Shore of Lake Nyasa in Kyela District, Mbeya region—Tanzania East Africa on the foot hills of Mount Livingstone. The hospital is located 45 Km from Kyela district town where there’s a district hospital. The location of the hospital itself to the lake view does make people enjoy the hidden paradise of Matema.
It started as a health post in 1905 by the German missionaries who started their mission work at Ikombe village in 1893. They decided to shift to Matema Village after the death of their colleagues which was most likely due to malaria with the idea that Matema is much healthier than Ikombe. So, they opened the health post, preaching and teaching activities.
Now day Matema hospital have different departments includes Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), Outpatients (OPD), Care and treatment center CTC, Inpatients, maternity, psychtric, palliative, opthlmogy, and general surgery.
